Re: NYACK MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SEARCH PROCESS

As you know, Nyack Middle School Principal, Marty Fiedler, retired from the District in December. Peter Telfer, a retired Middle School Principal, is currently serving as the Interim administrator for the rest of the school year.

To conduct the most effective search for Mr. Fiedler's replacement, the Board has retained FOCUS Consulting Associates to facilitate a comprehensive process. A key element of this process is the gathering of broad input on the characteristics desired in a new principal. The timeline for these input sessions, scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, and the entire process is as follows:

PRINCIPAL SEARCH TIMELINE:

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9: COMMUNITY AND STAFF INPUT SESSIONS facilitated by FOCUS to elicit the qualities and characteristics desired in a new principal. Input will be used for the recruitment profile.

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM - Parents/Community
3:15 PM - 4:00 PM - Teaching/Support Staff
4:15 PM - 5:00 PM - Clerical Staff & Teaching Assistants
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM - Instructional Council
8:00 PM - 9:30 PM - Parents/Community
JANUARY/FEBRUARY: Establishment Of Interview Committee

The committee will interview 8 finalists recommended by Focus. The twelve member committee will consist of: Director Of Secondary Education, a Middle School Assistant Principal, a building administrator, 3 Middle School teachers, 1 Middle School special area staff member, a Middle School professional support staff member, 3 Middle School parents from the school hiring list, and 1 community member.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY: Recruitment Brochure Completed/Position Advertised In Newspapers

Comprehensive advertising and mailing to universities, Superintendents, and all networks will be done for outreach to a broad spectrum of resources to solicit a diversity of candidates.

BEGINNING OF MARCH: Applications Close
MARCH: FOCUS Screens Candidates To Selection Of 8 Finalists
MARCH/MID-APRIL: Representative Committee Interviews Finalists

Committee sends names of no less than 5 candidates, in rank order, to the Superintendent for further interviews.

MID-APRIL: Interview of 5 Finalists by Superintendent and the Central Office Team, with recommendation of 3 finalists to the Board.
END-APRIL: Board Interviews 3 Recommended Finalists.
EARLY MAY: Site Visit of Lead Candidate by Interview Committee, Board, Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
MAY: Appointment of Principal effective no later than July 1, 2002
