January 9, 2002
The Honorable Harriet Cornell
Rockland County Legislature
11 New Hempstead Road
New City, New York 10956
Dear Mrs. Cornell,
As per the letter you previously received from the school district in regard to the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, the Nyack School Board unanimously approved the following resolution regarding the closure of the Plant at its Tuesday, January 8 public meeting.
RESOLUTION:
Whereas the safety and security of our students is our number one priority and responsibility
and
Whereas we believe that the current evacuation plan for the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is unworkable and unsafe for our children in its current form
and
Whereas we concur with many county and State leaders that the Indian Point Plant is not currently secure from the threat of terrorism
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that unless and until these concerns are eliminated, the Nyack Board of Education strongly advocates for the immediate closure of the Indian Point Nuclear Facility. Furthermore, we also strongly advocate for the timely dismantling and safe disposition of all spent nuclear material currently stored at the site.
As elected representatives of Nyack School District's 3000 students and their families, we ask you to seriously consider our deeply felt request to take whatever appropriate action is in your domain in regard to Indian Point to ensure the safety of our students. Accordingly, please submit this resolution as part of the record for the meeting of the Legislature on January 9, 2002. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Bryan Burrell
Nyack School Board President
