Dear Parents/Guardians

During my first month and a half in the District I have enjoyed a whirlwind of exciting activities that have made me feel extremely welcome, as well as proud to serve the children and families of Nyack Schools.

I have particularly enjoyed the scheduled chat times with community members.  During these sessions I received good wishes, and much helpful information. I also learned about some of our challenges that I look forward to addressing with staff and community members.  Although these late afternoon sessions will not formally continue, please feel free to schedule a convenient meeting with me so I can learn more about the community and schools.

During the year I hope to meet parents and guardians at the many scheduled school events.  Please remember that you don’t have to be in the school to be involved in your child’s education, but you should keep in contact on a regular basis with your child’s teacher.  This can be done in person, by phone or by mail.  Your questions and concerns are welcomed and will be responded to quickly.  Continuous two-way communication supports our students in reaching their goals.

My thirty years experience as an educator and administrator has taught me that children learn best in an environment that nurtures strong relationships built on trust, and that engages students in relevant, rigorous learning. I will be working in every way possible to make that happen for each child in our schools.

My best wishes for a great school year for your child(ren).

Sincerely,

Dr. Valencia F. Douglas

Superintendent of Schools
